Initiatives by Varsity Athletics
York's hockey teams hosted their annual PRIDE hockey games at Canlan Arena. Together with the Alphabet Sports Collective and Sport a Rainbow, this year's celebration brought together community members and York Lions fans with the message that hockey is for everyone.

Athletics & Recreation held its annual academic awards banquet, highlighting achievements in the classroom. To qualify for a U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian award, varsity student-athletes must be both eligible to play (18+ credits) and earn an A- (80%) grade average or better.

On January 25, the York Lions, alongside his parents, honoured former men's hockey athlete Mark Cross at the annual memorial game. Mark's memory lives on at York, and we all strive to embody the traits he was known for: Character, respect, optimism, sacrifice and selflessness.

2024 shared one of the most successful fall terms in recent memory for the Lions! Highlighted by a pair of U SPORTS medals for women's field hockey and men's soccer, seven major awards earned at the conference and national levels and the successful restart of the YorkU football program!

Athletics & Recreation recently hosted the Lions Cup golf tournament, which raised a record amount of funds for athletic bursaries. These funds will directly impact student success by offering the opportunity to focus on goals on and off the playing surface.

Athletics and Recreation hosted the fifth annual Women and Girls Leadership and Sport Conference in April. Beyond Bodies: Navigating Gender in Sport, explored the role of gender, including the impact on access and inclusion, policy and performance expectations.

In January, Athletics & Recreation held its annual academic awards banquet. The ceremony highlighted the outstanding academic achievements of student-athletes, honouring those who attained U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian status during the 2022-23 academic year.

Athletics & Recreation raised $154,000 for scholarships at the 20th annual Lions Cup Golf Tournament, presented by TD Insurance. Nearly 100 golfers gathered at Wyndance Golf Club in Uxbridge, Ont., achieving the goal of providing financial assistance to student-athletes.
