SCLD hosted a skills and development conference for students in paid and volunteer positions on May 13. This year's event featured a keynote presentation by YorkU Top 30 Under 30 Alumni, Farkhunda Muhtaj, who shared her journey as a humanitarian and sport activist and what resiliency means to her.
The Division of Students collaborated with VPEPC, VPFA and C&PA to host the Pride opening ceremonies on June 2. The event featured the unfurling of a Pride flag in Vari Hall and treats were available to attendees as they visited tables set up by various campus departments and services.
York University Athletics & Recreation hosted the annual Start2Finish run, which aims to help to break the cycle of child poverty through educational support, and celebration at York Lions Stadium, with special guest Yeo!
“Our end-of-year celebration is a wonderful opportunity to see the interconnection between us – giving students a chance to nominate faculty and staff who have supported them in their academic journey,” says Maureen Barnes, Director of Student Accessibility Services.
Since 2021, the Student Systems team has been configuring the Student Information System to be Markham-ready, a critical part the campus' launch. The admissions phase (the first of three distinct phases, which also includes enrolment and reports) is now complete and the project remains on track.
All York students now have greater access to mental wellness student support through keep.meSAFE, which includes 24/7 multilingual counselling options. Student Counselling, Health & Well-being is working with other support units to promote this update.
SAVY, York's student virtual assistant, saw an increase in student use during May. The number of average conversations and number of students using the platform per day increased by 28 and 35 per cent, respectively, from April. Students mostly asked questions about eClass and summer course delivery.
The York community came together for the 20th All Nations Pow Wow on May 7. Hosted by the Indigenous Students Association at York, the event had huge turnout with support from the Centre for Indigenous Student Services, Student Engagement, Athletics & Recreation and student and staff volunteers.
As part of our commitment to service excellence, the Office of the University Registrar has launched an external review of the University’s academic scheduling practices. This review will assist in developing a more student-centred scheduling process, in collaboration with campus partners.

Our Future begins now. With the addition of the new York University Markham Campus, it is imperative that we refine our holistic student service delivery. The pandemic has taught us that we also must provide services in all ways that reach our students – for example, not only in person but also online/remote.
There is a need to shift towards systems which integrate the ever-expanding use of data in ways that can create more efficient transactions and use of information. We must also re-examine the ways students interact and engage with learning and services to focus on the most impactful ways to help them succeed.Discover More About Create Our Future

An equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment means embedding principles of EDI in everything that we do. All actions and interactions are informed by the lived experience of individuals who face systemic barriers in accessing postsecondary education.
We must be intentional about removing barriers to gaining access and being successful within postsecondary education. Access is achieved when qualified individuals regardless of backgrounds or socio-economic status have clear pathways to enter postsecondary, and when navigating processes and services are easy. All community members strive to ensure that processes, services, and programs are easy to access.
Well-Being is a necessary pre-condition of working and learning. The current UAP identifies the need to create a sense of belonging, have a common purpose, and share responsibility in supporting each other to ensure that all members of our community feel welcome. These elements promote an environment where students and staff thrive and flourish.
Learning is reaching outside of comfort zones, discovering what is required to grow and committing to making those changes for improvement. A learning mindset at work and during interactions with students will help to discover the most effective, efficient and caring ways to be partners in success every time we connect with a student.
